2024 Public Art Project: Spatial Justice
Starting in 2023, we partnered with Coyote Central to teach a team of students ages 14-18 bring a community mural to life with Augmented Reality.
The final mural is on view in 3 locations:
1. Bitterlake Community Center
(Installed May 2024 on tennis court fence)
2. Belltown Mural Arts Festival
(August 16-19, 2024
3. Lake City-Bitter Lake Farmers Market
(TBD Fall 2024)
In 2023, a team of Coyote Central young artists designed and painted the mural under the guidance of teaching artist Marisol Ortega and with assistance from teaching artist Aaron Pozos. Students researched issues of food insecurity and access in their local neighborhoods of Lake City and Bitter Lake. They incorporated these themes into their mural alongside the idea of spatial justice, the intersection of space and social justice. A vinyl reproduction has been installed at the Bitter Lake Community Center. Learn more about the mural on Coyote Central’s website.
From April to June 2024, Future Arts and Coyote Central worked with a new team of students to activate the mural with Augmented Reality. Students learned about public art and creative software to develop storyboards, workflows, and QR codes to augment the mural through mobile with teachers Mai and Andrea.
The public will be able to scan a QR code on sections of the mural to see an animated/augmented version through their phone screen.
